A hat trick by Maddie Hulter led the Fergus Falls girls’ hockey team to a 6-5 home ice victory over the Crookston Pirates on Saturday afternoon.  Fergus Falls had a 39-24 advantage in shots on goal.

The Otters spotted the Pirates an early lead at Cassie Solheim found the back of the net just 51 seconds into the contest.  She was setup by Mackenze Epema.  Fergus Falls then scored three straight goals to end the first period with a 3-1 lead.  Hulter got the Otters on the board at 2:26, from Hope GoepferdVivian Karsnia’s goal at 12:33, from Piper Andrews and Lexi McGary gave the Otters a 2-1 advantage, and Hulter’s second of the period at 13:24 made it a 3-1 game.  Jade Zierden and Ellie Andersen assisted on that goal.

Fergus Falls increased their lead to 4-1 when Andersen scored from Zierden 1:40 into the second period.  Crookston then rattled off three straight goals to tie the game at 4-4.  Kendall Bergquist (Dillynn Wallace), Nora Peterson (unassisted) and Catherine Tiedemann (Samantha Sanders) earned the goals and assists.  The Otters were able to regain the lead at 16:46 when McGary scored from Andrews.

Hulter completed her hat trick at 9:47 of the third, assisted by Skye Norgren, giving the Otters a 2-goal cushion at 6-4.  Breck Fugleberg gave the Pirates hope with her goal from Jenna Seaver and Bergquist at 10:18, but the Otters were able to hold on for the 6-5 win.

Ana Jyrkas stopped 19 of the 24 Crookston shots.

Fergus Falls (5-7) will host Northern Lakes on Tuesday and Alexandria on Thursday.
