The Prairie’s Edge Dental 10U A Hockey team traveled to Alexandria the weekend of December 6-8, where they participated in the Big Ole Tournament.  In addition to the Otters and Cardinals, 4 Metro teams were in attendance.

The first match-up for the Otters was Friday night against Chaska-Chanhassen.  The Otters worked hard and earned their first win of the tourney, 5-2.  Scoring leaders for game 1 were Maggie Greenagel with 2 goals, and Maddie Brimhall & Lydia Johnson with 1 each.

Early Saturday morning, the Fergus girls squared off against Hopkins-St. Louis Park.  The Maroon & Gold started strong and quick, ending the first period up 4-1.  In a dominant win, the Otters tallied 9 goals to the opponents’ 2.  Evelyn Wedll scored her first 2 goals of the season, with Greenagel earning a hat trick and Brimhall a pair of goals.  Johnson & Aubree Nelson also earned a goal apiece.

Game 3 for the 10Us proved the hardest foe season-to-date, Blaine-Spring Lake Park.  Otter goalie Mia Olson was put to work right away, with some aggressive offense and 10 shots on goal in the first.  Olson turned away 8 of 10, but all 6 of the Otters’ shots were denied.  Blaine increased their lead to 3 in the second period, but Fergus Falls lit the lamp just 14 seconds later, with Kynzie Zender scoring from Greenagel and Anna Sem.   Sem then brought the Otters within one with a goal of her own, assisted by Averie Tonneson.  After ending the second period with a 3-2 score, the eventual tournament champions were off to the races, and earned 5 more goals for the win.

After the three round-robin games, Fergus Falls was awarded the #3 seed.  This brought them up against a familiar foe, Alexandria.  Having just earned a narrow overtime win a week prior, coaches Erik Johnson & Josh Shol knew it would be another close battle.  Both teams played some great defense in a scoreless first period, with shots on goal kept to just 5 for the Otters and 4 for the Cards.  In the second, Alex fired first, but Brimhall earned two quick goals for the lead.  The first was an unassisted sprint past the defenders, and the second was assisted by Greenagel & Wedll.  In the third, Greenagel added an insurance goal for the Otters, but Alexandria came back less than a minute later.  Then, in the final minute of the game, the Cards pulled their goalie and tied the score.   After 5 riveting minutes of overtime where neither team found the net, the battle for the trophy came down to a shootout.  Olson had a couple outstanding saves, but in the end the trophy stayed home in Alexandria.

Hoping to improve on their already impressive 7-3 record, the Prairie’s Edge squad next heads West for a double-header against the Fargo Freeze.
