Otters Score All Nine Overtime Points in Win Over Willmar

The Fergus Falls girls’ basketball team won for a fifth straight time when they defeated the Willmar Cardinals 47-38 in overtime on Thursday night at the Kennedy Secondary School Gold Gymnasium.

 

Willmar got off to a fast start as they scored the first five points of the game and built their lead up to 17-10, before Fergus Falls went on a 15 point run to end the half with a 25-17 lead and then scored the first three points of the second half to extend their run to 18 straight points and their lead to 28-17.  The Otters increased their lead to fourteen points, but then Willmar outscored the Otters 16-2, tying the game at 37-37.  The game ended up tied at the end of regulation, 38-38.

The Otters scored all 9 points in overtime, beginning with a made 3-point field goal by Tori RatzSabrina Fronning took the lead up to five points with a pair of free throws and then Fronning converted a pair of transition layups off of steals and assists by Ellie Colbeck.

Colbeck led the Otters with 14 points, including a trio of 3’s.  Fronning finished with 10 points and Ratz added 9.

Katelyn Murphy and Mackenzie Jones led Willmar with 12 points each.

The Otters (5-1) will play at Sauk Rapids-Rice on Tuesday night.

Willmar won the JV game 35-30.  Ainsley Hansen scored 8 points to led the Otters.

In the ninth grade game, Willmar posted a 30-24 victory.
