The Fergus Falls PeeWee A team traveled to Detroit Lakes to participate in the “Holi-dangle” tournament.

The Otters first game, played on Friday evening December 6, was against the very talented team from Canada, Ft. Gary Twins. The game proved that the Twins were not only skilled in scoring also in defense. The Otters only goal was scored by Adam Kennedy. The Otters started their weekend 0-1.

The following morning still feeling the sting of defeat the Otters returned to the rink ready to show off their holiday spirit and get a win! “All the OTTER reindeer,” were faced against Anoka. Knowing this was going to be yet another skilled team the Otters came ready to defend their goal. Just 30 seconds into the game Anoka was able to find the back of the net. The rest of the period showed how talented their goalie was. Unable to get the puck past the Anoka goalie, the Otters ended the period 0-3.

Now that the Otters knew what they were up against, they came back in the 2nd to claim an unassisted goal by Michael Schmidt near the end of the period. Anoka wanted to make sure that they got the final word of the period and 2 minutes later again found the back of the net. The 2nd period ended with the Otters down 1-4.

Otter coaches, Lucas Gervais, Trevor Gervais, Pete Gaustad and Scott Samuelson retreated to the locker room to raise the spirits of the Otters. Ready to prove to Anoka that Fergus Falls had what it took they came out ready to play. Kennedy was able to find the back of the net assisted by Jack Welde and Schmidt. Continuing with the energy from the last goal Schmidt was able to score assisted by Welde. The power duo proved they were nothing to be taken lightly now that the game was within 1 point, the Otters stepped up their plays. The next goal would tie the score, Schmidt (hat trick) from Welde (playmaker)! We have a tie game!! With the taste of victory so close and 8 minutes remaining in the period the Otters needed to keep up their momentum. Schmidt with a great pass connects with Welde and SCORE! The Otters are up. Only 43 seconds remain. Will they keep the lead? Anoka trying to get the game back pulls their goalie. The otters fight hard, Cam Alt on the breakaway, he shoots and seals the deal. The Otters beat Anoka 6-4 proving that if you work hard even when you are behind you can get the game back.

The Otters took the afternoon to find something to eat and take a break before returning to the rink to take on the Bismark Capitals. The Capitals quickly showed the Otters they were not to be messed with. This continued for most of the game. The final score was 2-12 the Otter goals were scored by Alt and Schmidt, both unassisted.

After a night of rest and well deserved sleep the Otters returned to challenge Anoka one more time. Knowing that this game was a well matched and competitive game the Otters were ready to defend their victory. With an Otter penalty early in the game Anoka was able to score a Power Play goal. Schmidt replied back quickly with an unassisted goal to make this a game. Energized from the last goal the Otters were able to get on top with a goal scored by Alt and assisted by Schmidt. Shortly later Schmidt found the back of the net to give the Otters a 2 point lead. Schmidt’s goal was assisted by Welde.

The second period showed to be competitive with great blocks, passes, and plays by both teams. The goalies held each team until 5 minutes remaining when Anoka was able to slip one past the Otter goalie. Making sure that Anoka didn’t get too confident Welde assisted by Schmidt and Kennedy put the Otters back at a 2 goal lead. With 4 minutes remaining and Anoka in the box for hooking the Otters were on a power play. Just to seal the deal Welde and Brock Scheuerman assisted Schmidt on the final goal of the game, and a hat trick. The Otters defended their territory well with many great defensive plays and teamwork by Parker Thielke, Braden Albert, Henry Greenagel, Brody Krein, Aiden Schake, Hunter Powers and great goaltending from Holden Stenstrom and Gabe Samuelson
