On Tuesday night the West Central Area Lady Knights hosted the Minnewaska Area Lakers in a non-conference girls’ basketball game, which the Knights won by the score of 59-55.

The game started out with the Lady Knights jumping out to a double digit lead 20-8.  The Knights would exchange a few mini runs late in the first half to make the halftime score 38 - 28 in their favor.  The second half opened with a fury of action and saw the Knights increase their lead to 15 points several times.  The Lakers would respond and cut the deficit to 54-47 with a few minutes to play.  The Knights would sneak away with a 59-55 victory after timely free-throws and offensive rebounds occurred.

“It was another great game that we were a part of during this young season.  We couldn’t edge out LPA in a similar situation the Saturday before, so it was good to be on the victorious side this time,” said WCA Head Coach Eric Schoenbauer. “We did not play perfect but we played solid enough to walk away with a win.”

The Knights were led by Lexi Bright with 29 points, 7 assists, 4 steals, 4 rebounds and 2 blocks.  Elizabeth Rustan had an efficient night and scored 8 points, 6 rebounds and a block. Kaylyn Ulrich dropped in 7 points, had 3 assists, 2 steals and a rebound. Kennedy Ulrich put in 6 points, grabbed 3 rebounds, had 2 steals and 2 assists. Hailey Bennett scored 4 points, grabbed a rebound, a steal and had an assist. Brynn Fernholz had 3 points, 2 rebounds and a steal. Claire Stark had 2 points, 5 rebounds, an assist and 2 steals. Teagan Nelson had 4 steals, 3 rebounds and 2 assists. Brooke Anderson ripped down a rebound and Kaitlyn Hansen had 2 steals on the night.

“The team did what it needed to do to win the game and the crazy part is that anyone that missed the game would have missed the contributions of all of our players,” said Coach Schoenbauer.  “Hailey and Kaylyn did a fantastic job defensively to shut down a dynamic scorer. Teagan did not score a basket tonight, but without her we would not have been successful in this game.  Every one of the players did something important tonight to make us walk away with a win.”
