Caleb Strong scored a power play goal at 5:27 of overtime to lift the Alexandria boys’ hockey team to a 4-3 win over Mankato West on Saturday afternoon. Josiah Gronholz and Andrew Revering assisted on the goal, giving the Cardinals their fourth straight victory and improving their season record to 5-1.
Mankato West led 2-0 after the first period, thanks to a pair of Brandon Swenson goals. The first was unassisted and on the second, assists went to Gavin Brunmeir and Hunter Meixner.
Alexandria got on the board at 6:26 of the second when Revering converted a pass from Strong on the power play. The home team regained a two-goal lead as Swenson completed his hat trick from Brunmeir.
The Cardinals rallied to tie the game with a pair of late goals. Gronholz scored at 15:37 from Strong and Matthew Carlsen added a goal with just 31 seconds remaining in the third period, forcing overtime.
Alexandria had 41 shots on goal and Mankato West managed just 17.
