The Underwood girls basketball team built a 36-23 lead at the half, but New York Mills came storming back in the second half.  The rally came up short as the Rockets held on for a 55-52 victory over the Eagles.

“We really got off to a fast start in the game both our defensive pressure and offensive decision making was excellent,” said Underwood Head Coach Brian Hovland.  “Then we hit a wall on both ends of the floor.  We struggled to get into any offensive flow and thus turned the ball over way too many times trying to force the issue.  For a first game it was pretty typical.  We need to work at bringing defensive pressure more than the first five minutes of the game and make better decisions on the offensive side of the ball when we get into a half-court game.”

The Rockets were led by Kayla Rocholl (19 points, 9 steals), Josey Bugbee (17 points, 11 rebounds, 4 steals), Ally Johnson (8 points, 6 rebounds) and Ceri Meech (6 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals).

Underwood struggled with their shooting, making only 20-of-62 (32%) field goal attempts and hitting just 11-of-28 (39%) free throws.

The Rockets will host Ashby in their Little Eight Conference opener on Tuesday night.
