Wayzata, ranked number two in the Class 4A Minnesota High School Girls Basketball poll, shot 74% (31-42) on two-point field goal attempts and made 38% (8-21) of their three-pointers on Friday night in Hopkins as they posted an 87-48 victory over the Fergus Falls Otters.  Wayzata held a halftime lead of 44-27.

With Minnesota Gophers Head Coach Lindsay Whalen in attendance junior forward Jenna Johnson poured in 32 points and sophomore guard Mara Braun added 19 to lead the Trojans.

“I thought we played good basketball for the first fifteen minutes, but turnovers late in the first half put us behind by 17,” said Head Coach Brad Strand of Fergus Falls.  “Their length gave us all kinds of trouble throughout the game and they just didn’t miss their shots.  I thought Paige Pearson really battled them defensively and she had a good rebounding night with 9 boards.”

The Otters were led by 20 points from Ellie Colbeck and 15 from Sabrina Fronning.

Wayzata won the JV game 39-26.

Fergus Falls will host Albany in their home opener on Tuesday night.  It is also Parent’s Night at the Kennedy Secondary School Gold Gymnasium.
