The Ashby girls basketball team hosted Detroit Lakes in their season opener on Friday night and the Lakers held on for a hard fought 55-50 win over the Arrows.

DL built an early 18-5 lead, however, an eleven point run by the Arrows cut the lead to 18-16.  The Lakers led 28-24 at the half, but Ashby took their only lead of the night at 36-35 with just over ten minutes remaining in the game.  The Laker lead was 49-42 when Ashby rattled off five straight points to pull with two with just over two minutes to play, but they could get no closer.

Courtney Koefod scored 13 points to lead Ashby.  Kalista Aamot and Celi Nelson added 11 points each with Nelson hitting three of the six 3-pointers made by the Arrows.  Ashby took excellent care of the basketball with only two second half turnovers and thirteen on the night.

Detroit Lakes guard Sarah Tangen had the hot hand all night for the Lakers, finishing with 24 points, including five treys and 5-for-7 shooting from the foul line.  Maddy Bowers added 14 points, sinking three 3-pointers.  DL made only 12-of-31 free throw attempts.

Ashby will play a road game against Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley on Tuesday night.
