The Pelican Rapids Vikings scored fourteen first quarter points on the way to a 40-12 victory over the United North Central Warriors in the Section 8AA quarterfinals on Tuesday night.

Matt Ziebell got the Vikings on the board with a six-yard run at 9:17 of the first quarter.  Johnny Ziebell added a 3-yard TD run and Carson McNeal ran in the two-point conversion for a 14-0 lead.

With 8:20 left in the second Brandon Miller broke a 68 yard run for a United North Central touchdown, cutting the Vikings lead to 14-6.  With 45 seconds left in the half McNeal scored on a 3-yard run to put the Vikings in front 22-6 at the half.

“We gave up one big play in the first half that resulted in a long touchdown run and pulled within a one possession game,” said Head coach David Haugen of Pelican Rapids.  “I was pleased that we were able to get that score back before halftime and rebuild the lead.  It was great to be able to build on the lead in the third quarter and essentially put the game away.  The fourth quarter we were able to play a lot of kids and get everyone some game time experience in a playoff game so that was exciting for everyone.  Our ability to run between the tackles really gave us a big advantage and the offensive line deserves a lot of credit for our performance tonight.”

Pelican Rapids added touchdown from Johnny Ziebell on a 3-yard run and Logan Fahlje on a 5-yard reception from McHale Korf, to up their lead to 34-6 after three quarters.

Carter Johnson finished the Pelican Rapids scoring with a 3-yard run and UNC added another TD on a 34 yard pass completion from Kolby Kiser to Jonah Howard.

Pelican Rapids had 401 yards of total offense, 396 coming on the ground.  Leading rushers were Matt Ziebell (14 carries, 112 yards), Jayden Rutherford (6 carries, 80 yards), Korf (12 carries, 62 yards) and Johnny Ziebell (12 carries, 59 yards).  Defensive leaders were Johnny Ziebell (3 solo tackles, 3 assists), McNeal (2 solo tackles, 4 assists) and Rutherford (3 solo tackles, 1 interception).

United North Central had 239 total yards, 170 on the ground and 69 through the air.  Miller had 81 yards rushing on 6 attempts and Kiser completed 5-of-15 passes for 64 yards.

The second-seeded Vikings will host number three Frazee in the Section semifinals on Saturday at 2:00pm.
