The Breckenridge Cowgirls finished 2-2 in the Barnesville tournament on Saturday.

The first match was a rematch of the previous Thursday night as the Cowgirls faced off with the Hawley Nuggets and the Nuggets posted a 2-0 (25-16, 25-23) win. “We struggled to compete in the first set against Hawley as we had quite a few players playing different positions,” stated Breckenridge Head Coach Margaret Wilson. “Abby Johnson is out from her head-first crash on Thursday night, so we needed to move some players around in order to fill her position. During the second set, we got more comfortable with the new rotations and seemed to settle in and played a tough set, but came up short.”

The Cowgirls finished out their pool play matches with two wins against Fertile-Beltrami (25-20, 25-16) and Crookston (25-13, 25-12). “We played an excellent match against Fertile-Beltrami! Our defense was on point, especially our blocking,” said Coach Wilson. We finished the 2-set match with 6 kill blocks and 47 digs. Our hitters played an aggressive game as well; our kill leader was Riley Lorenz earning 9, Jude Held finished with 6 and Camryn Kaehler recorded 5 in the match.  Kaitlin Arnhalt had 11 set assists and 14 digs.”

In the win over Crookston the Cowgirls were led by Lorenz (6 kills), Held (5 kills) and Carcie Materi (7 set assists).

Finishing 2nd in their pool, the Cowgirls took on the 2nd place team in the other pool, Frazee. “We controlled the first set, getting up 22-13, and then we got stuck,” reported Wilson. “A couple bad serve receive passes and strong blocks by Frazee, it was quickly 22-22. We just couldn’t seem to get a decent attack, and it truly hurt us as Breckenridge lost 26-24. In the second set, we were able to gain some ground and got up 22-15. Once again, in the same rotation, we got stuck. Frazee took advantage and beat us 25-22. It was a frustrating match and not how we wanted to end the day, but it gives us a good idea of what to expect when we face them in a couple weeks.”

The Cowgirls have their last two home games this coming week, hosting Wadena-Deer Creek Tuesday and Perham Thursday.
