The Pelican Rapids Vikings traveled to Frazee Thursday, September 26th for a Heart O’ Lakes Conference battle against the Hornets. Frazee prevailed in the grueling 5-set match, winning 19-25, 27-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-13.

“An all-out battle is exactly what we got,” explained Vikings Head Coach Heidi Isaman.  “The Vikings and Hornets played an intense 5 set battle that went back and forth all night long with great heart, desire, and effort coming from both ends.  The Vikings come out set one serving very aggressively and Frazee had trouble passing the ball which gave us many offensive opportunities.  We controlled the momentum of the game for most of the set.  Set 2 we continued to serve very well but so did Frazee.  We struggled a bit in serve receive which caused us to not get our offense as powerful as we would have liked.  Frazee found the open spot on our court and a few communication errors on our end caused the Hornets to come out on top.  Set 3 we knew we need to continue to serve aggressively, but improve our serve receive and our defense on their off tempo balls.  The Vikings answered.  Ryley Paulson (6 aces), Riley Berg (2 aces), and Greta Tollefson (6 aces) served the ball great all night long to really weaken the Hornets offensive opportunities.  Middle hitter Greta Tollefson (14 kills) was starting to do a great job of swinging hard through their triple block against her and made a few key plays at the net.  Anna Stephenson (16 digs, 7 kills) and Ryley Paulson (28 digs, 6 kills) did a much better job of reading their off tempo balls and defense and picked up a lot of balls we were struggling picking up earlier and we were able to win the set.  Set 4 the Vikings started strong.  We started to get Ryley Berg and Anna Stephenson in our offense more but a run of struggling serve receive hurt us once again and the Hornets gained a lead. JeNae Femling and Kelsey Isaman made a couple smart key plays to get us back in the lead but a few setting and hitting errors on our end caused the close game to swing back to the Hornets as they were able to even the match and force a fifth set.  The Vikings were ready for battle and pushed ahead with everything they had.  Once again we started out extremely strong with our aggressive serving and were up 6-1, however, Frazee answered right back and served extremely aggressively right back and we could not pass the ball well enough to attack back at them.  They went on an 8 point run and it was a 9-6 Frazee game.  Sophia Paulson (11 set assists) did a great job of setting Greta right on the tape and a few key kills by Greta Tollefson switched the momentum back our way. The Vikings also did an amazing job pursuing a few shanked balls to keep the ball alive. Allie Haiby (9 digs) helped us make some big passes.  We were right back in it but a few mistakes caused the tight battle to end up on the side of the Hornets.  This entire match was filled with excitement and grit and I was extremely proud of how these girls responded tonight.  The Vikings played well as a team and our defense continues to get better and better each game.  Our offense took control more tonight that we have been able to do up to now and our aggressive serving was very impressive.  This was a great game of volleyball on both ends.

No Frazee information was reported.
