Alexandria Wins Battle of the Cardinals

Matthew Carlsen threw for three touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Alexandria Cardinals to a 43-13 victory over the Willmar Cardinals on Friday night.  Carlsen completed 11-of-16 passes for 206 yards and ran for 40 yards on 7 carries.

Carlsen scored on a one yard run in the first quarter and Sean Haak added the extra point kick to give Alexandria a 7-0 lead.  They extended the lead to 14-0 on a 17 yard run by Nolan Morical and another PAT kick by Haak.

Morical scored early in the second quarter on a 44yard run and Haak’s extra point kick made it 21-0.  Kristen Hoskins hauled in a 36 yard pass from Carlsen and Haak booted the PAT to make it 28-0.  Carlsen then hit Elijah Holthaus on a 27 yard pass and Haak was good again on his extra point try, putting the lead at 35-0.  Carlsen hooke dup with Morical on a 16 yard TD pass and then Sam Boettner caught a two-point conversion pass from Kade Blankenship to give Alexandria a 43-0 lead.

Willmar scored on a ten yard run in the third quarter and a forty yard pass in the fourth quarter, making one of two extra-point kicks.

Morical had a big night running the football with 117 yards on 11 carries. Aaron Jost ran for 85 yards on 12 attempts.  Hoskins was the leading receiver with 82 yards on 5 receptions.  Holthaus caught two passes for 63 yards.

Defensive leaders were Sam Boettner (9 tackles, fumble recovery) and Zander Homelvig (5 tackles, fumble recovery).  Brady Anderson and Jaymeson Molesworth each had an interception.
