The Pelican Rapids football team suffered their first loss of the season on Friday night when they fell to Mahnomen-Waubun by the score of 28-6.

Tanner Pazdernik got Mahnomen-Waubun on the board with 2:11 to play in the first quarter with a four yard touchdown run.  With 7:33 left in the first half Pazdernik hit Koda Thompson with a 4 yard touchdown pass and then ran in the two-point conversion to put the home team up 14-0.

Two third quarter TD’s gave Mahnomen-Waubun a 28-0 advantage.  Jack Miller carried the ball in from the 7 yard line and Brodie Bement broke free for a 47 yard TD run.  Bement then added the two-point conversion run.

Pelican Rapids got their lone touchdown with 10:18 to play in the game when McHale Korf hooked up with Logan Fahje for a 22 yard TD pass.

“Mahnomen-Waubun was able to control the line of scrimmage as they controlled the ball and the scoreboard,” commented Pelican Rapids Head Coach David Haugen.  “We were close to a couple of big plays but against a good team like Mahnomen-Waubun you need to make the play when you get the chance as you don't get many opportunities.  I felt like we kept working and competing and actually improved as the game went on.  If we can learn from this game and continue to improve we can still be successful moving forward.”

Mahnomen-Waubun compiled 420 (416 rushing, 4 passing) total yards and Pelican Rapids finished with 163 (101 rushing, 62 passing).

The Vikings were led by Korf (6 completions, 13 attempts, 62 yards, 14 carries, 55 yards) and Matt Ziebell (9 carries, 39 yards).  Ziebell also led the defensive effort with 11 (7 solo, 8 assists) tackles.  Johnny Ziebell had 9 (7 solo, 4 assists) tackles.

Bement (19 carries, 164 yards), Pazdernik (18 carries, 98 yards) led Mahnomen-Waubun.
