Verndale Pirates Strike Early in Win Over UNC

Friday the 13th and a full moon couldn’t help the United North Central Warriors out on Friday night as they were plundered by the Verndale Pirates 50–14.

The Warriors were able to stop the Pirates on their opening drive, but after that the Pirates got things rolling. They scored 16 points in the opening quarter, starting with a one yard run by Dilan Orlando and a two point conversion run by Craig OrlandoJake Ismil scored on a 24 yard run and Craig Orlando carried the ball in for the conversion to make it a 16-0 Verndale lead. At halftime, the score was 36-0 as the Pirates added second quarter TD's from Craig Orlando (17 yard run), Dilan Orlando (1 yard run) and Jake Ismil (5 yard run).  Following the Ismil TD the Pirates converted on a pass from Dilan Orlando to Zak Olsson.

The Pirates put up 14 points in the 3rd quarter when Olsson hit Dilan Orlando with a 27 yard scoring toss and Zach Brownlow scored on a 5 yard run.  Olsson hauled in a two point conversion pass from Dilan Orlando to end the Verndale scoring.

At the start of the third quarter, the Warriors put a drive together, but ended up turning it over. A few drives later, the Warriors would find the end zone with Jonah Howard punching it in from 4 yards out. Mason Heino ran in the 2 point conversion.

The 4th quarter consisted of the JV getting some playing time. Brock Berttunen hooked up with Hank Tellers on a 34 yard completion. A few plays later, Berttunen completed a 23 yard pass to Collin Olson. Brock took care of the rest and covered 14 yards over 2 plays and scored his first varsity touchdown. Jonah Howard broke the century mark with 109 rushing yards and 1 touchdown on 23 carries.

UNC freshman Hank Tellers recorded his first varsity catch for 34 yards and fellow freshman Collin Olson caught his first varsity pass for 23 yards.  Another freshman Brock Berttunen scored his first varsity TD on a 5-yard run and completed both of his pass attempts for 57 yards.

Leading tacklers for the Warriors were Brandon Miller (5 solo tackles, 7 assists), Jonah Howard (1 solo tackle, 6 assists), Eion Ness (3 solo tackles, 8 assists), Tyce Lee (3 solo tackles, 4 assists), Hunter Skaro (2 solo tackles, 3 assists), Logan Torma (1 solo tackle, 4 assists) and Ivan Anderson (1 solo tackle, 3 assists).

Verndale amassed 463 yards (361 rushing, 102 passing) on the night.  They were led by Ismil (14 carries, 210 yards, 4 catches, 60 yards), Dilan Orlando (9 completions, 12 attempts, 103 yards) and Craig Orlando (12 carries, 113 yards).  Craig Orlando led the defensive effort with 18 tackles and a pair of quarterback sacks.
