With the score tied at 14-14 at the half, Breckenridge and Staples-Motley were involved in an evenly matched, tightly contested high school football contest on Friday night in Staples.  The home town Cardinals scored a third quarter touchdown to break the tie and held on for a 20-14 win over the visiting Cowboys.

Staples-Motley had 259 (172 rushing, 87 passing) yards of offense on the night, while Breckenridge finished with 290 (243 rushing, 47 passing).

Leaders for the Cowboys were Daniel Erlandson (12 carries, 78 yards), Chris Nieto (11 carries, 64 yards), Jack Aigner (11 carries, 58 yards), Cooper Yaggie (3-of-9 passes, 58 yards).  Jace Jensen was the receiving leader with 2 catches for 44 yards.

Breckenridge struck first when Nieto scored on a 5 yard run in the first quarter, however, the Cardinals answered when Max Strickland connected with Cade Schmidt on a 5 yard touchdown pass.  Sivert Klefsaas ran the two-point conversion into the end zone, giving Staples-Motley an 8-6 lead.

A 25 yard run by Nieto, followed by a Nieto run for two points, put the score at 14-8.  Staples-Motley tied the game on a 5 yard TD pass from Strickland to Schmidt.

The deciding run came in the third quarter when Klefsaas broke loose for a 57 yard touchdown.
