Gardin Scores 3 TD's in Win over Roseau

Nik Gardin scored three rushing touchdowns and Chase Janu carried the ball 14 times for 110 yards to key the Underwood Rockets 44-8 win over Roseau on Friday night in Underwood.

 

Gardin got the Rockets on the board with ten minutes left in the first quarter when he broke free for a 39 yard touchdown run.  The two point conversion run by Noah Schleske put the Rockets lead at 8-0.  With 1:30 left in the quarter Gardin scored from 4 yards out and Zane Swanson accounted for the two-point conversion run, making it a 16-0 Underwood lead.

Ben Olson scored the lone Roseau TD thirty seconds into the second quarter on a six yard run and then added the two-point conversion run to cut the Rockets advantage to 16-8.

Underwood increased their lead to 30-8 at halftime on TD runs of 5 yards by Timothy DeVaney and ten yards by Gardin.  DeVaney scored on a two-point conversion run after the Gardin TD.

Janu found the end zone with nine minutes left in the third quarter on a ten yard run.  Winston Heifort added the PAT kick to put the lead at 37-8.

A fourth quarter TD run of 5 yards by Slade Moore, followed by a Heifort kick, made the final score, 44-8 in favor of the Rockets.

Underwood had 406 yards of total offense, with 387 coming on the ground.  Gardin picked up 85 yards on 10 carries and Swanson had 70 yards on 6 attempts.  Underwood had 11 different ball carriers in the game.  Swanson also caught all three of Gardin’s passes for 19 yards.

Defensive leaders for Underwood were Swanson (5 solo tackles), Heifort (4 solo tackles, 1 assisted tackle, 1 sack), Krosby Aasness (4 solo tackles, 1 assisted tackle), DeVaney (4 solo tackles).  Janu had 3 solo tackles and a sack in the game.  Logan Aune also had a sack for the Rockets.

“I was really happy with our execution tonight especially on offense,” commented Underwood Head Coach Chuck Ross.  “Chase Janu really had a night running the ball and that gives us another weapon in the backfield.  We have to carry this momentum into next week as we have a tough Ada-Borup team coming to town.”
