The Fergus Falls volleyball team participated in the Southwest Minnesota State University Invitational this past weekend in Marshall, playing five matches over two days.  The Otters finished with a 1-4 record in the tournament.

On Friday they opened play against a Lakeville North team that finished fourth in the 32 team field.  The Otters lost 2-0 (25-13, 25-10).  “We fought hard, competed, and learned along the way, against a very good team,” said Fergus Falls Head Coach Renee Erickson.

Their second match of the night was against New Prague, resulting in a 2-0 (25-9, 25-20) loss.

On Saturday the Otters opened with a 2-0 (25-14, 28-26) loss to Perham, followed by a 2-1 (25-19, 15-25, 15-12) win over Heron Lake-Okabena-Fulda.  “We did a very nice job at the net and showed a strong blocking game,” said Erickson.

Their final match was a 2-1 (25-18, 22-25, 15-10) loss to Yellow Medicine East.  Having lost our setter Kaia Strom to an injury on the first day of the tournament, I thought our kids showed great patience with our new setter, Laci Strom, and she really did a great job as she got comfortable running the offense,” said Coach Erickson.

Statistical leaders for the Otters were Sabrina Fronning (5.5 blocks, 31 digs, 26/18 serving, 19 kills), Logan Strom (41 digs, 8/9 serving, 4 kills), Paige Pearson (19 digs, 17/20 serving, 4 kills, 2 blocks), Jade Zierden (4.5 blocks, 26 digs, 42/45 serving, 15 kills), Katie Strommen (5 blocks, 10/13 serving, 16 kills), Hannah Prody (14 blocks, 22/23 serving, 20 kills), Laci Strom (28 set assists, 9 digs, 18/19 serving) and Kaia Strom (39 set assists, 20/21 serving, 3 aces).
