A twenty point second quarter sparked the New York Mills Eagles to a 32-7 victory over Pine River-Backus in their football season opener on Friday night.  The Eagles compiled 357 total yards with 296 coming on the ground.

“A big win for our team to start the season off against a Section opponent,” said New York Mills Head Coach Matt Radniecki.  “Our offensive and defensive lines played very well and controlled the line of scrimmage.  When you can run twice as many plays as the opponent you are doing your job.  I was very pleased with how our linemen played.  We have some good backs and Logan Small made some great runs.  He had three touchdowns that were just fun to watch especially the first one.  It was like a bug on water the way he was moving and shaking.  Daunte Leiran had a very good game with 22 carries for 141 yards and 1 TD. Daunte is becoming a big power back with speed and is really developing and making strides each and every practice.”

Small got the Eagles on the board with a 38 yard run and Leiran followed that with a 24 yard TD run.  Small hit tight end Isaiah Laudenbach with the two-point conversion pass to make it 14-0.  Small added an 11 yard run for the third score of the quarter and a 20-0 halftime lead.

Small scored on a 35 yard run in the third quarter and their fourth quarter touchdown came from Bren Salo on a two yard run.

New York Mills allowed only 91 yards of offense in the game and held Pine River-Backus to just three first downs.

“On defense we played very well only giving up 3 first downs and if you take the 49 yard touchdown run out at the end of the game they managed very little against us,” said Radniecki.  “Coaches Ped Butenhoff and Eric Niemi had the guys in position to make plays and they did.  We had a great crowd and it was fun to start our season off right.  We play a good Pelican Rapids team this Friday and we are looking forward to the test.  It should be a good game.”
