The Barnesville football team led 35-0 at halftime and then hung on through the second half for a 35-22 victory over the Ada-Borup Cougars as they opened their season with a home game on Friday night.

“We played a terrific first half and a very average to below average 2nd half,” stated Barnesville Head Coach Bryan Strand.  “We did rotate and rest guys but our backups have to be better and we have to take care of the ball.  In the first half we had 195 yards rushing and 10 yards passing, 35 points to their zero, while holding them to 17 yards of total offense in 1st half.  I thought we came out thinking they were going to roll over and everything is easy, good lesson to learn.  Ada is a very good team and very well coached, they might just go 7-1 this year. We were all impressed by them.”

Aaron Schiefert scored the first touchdown of the night on a 35 yard run and Adam Tonsfeldt score the two-point conversion.  Tonsfeldt then threw a pair of TD passes covering five yards, the first to Hunter Zenzen and the second to Cameron Heng.  Tonsfeldt scored another two-point conversion following the Heng TD and the score stood at 22-0 after one quarter.

In the second quarter, Schiefert ran in from 27 yards out and Tonsfeldt scored on a six yard run.  Nolan Rick kicked the extra point following the Tonsfeldt run and the halftime score was 35-0.

The Trojans boasted a balanced running attack between Schiefert (5 attempts, 74 yards, 2 TDs), Heng (9 carries, 72 yards) and Tonsfeldt (11 carries, 68 yards, TD).  They ran for 250 yards on 38 attempts.   Tonsfeldt completed 2-of-4 passes for 10 yards and two TD’s.

Defensive leaders were Joey Mark (5 solo tackles, sack, fumble recovery) and Zenzen (3 solo tackles, 5 assisted tackles, sack).  Tonsfeldt and Hunter Anderson each had an interception.

Barnesville will play Hawley on Friday night.
