The Underwood Rockets led 14-0 after one quarter, 30-0 at the half, 38-0 after three quarters of play and 46-6 at the final horn as they opened the 2019 football season with a solid road win over Lake Park-Audubon.

Underwood compiled 343 yards on the night with all but two of those yards coming on the ground.  The Rockets had 24 first downs and converted 4-of-8 third down attempts into first downs.  Nik Gardin (14 attempts, 109 yards, 3 TDs) and Zane Swanson (12 attempts, 104 yards, 1 TD) led the ground attack for the Rockets, and Wyatt Thorson added 53 yards on 9 carries and ran for one score.

“Offensively, I thought we came out and executed our new offense well. It's been a work in progress .all preseason and it came together tonight,” said Underwood Head Coach Chuck Ross.  Nick Gardin who started his first game ever at QB really stood out and he also threw the first TD pass of his career. Zane Swanson also ran the ball well tonight.”
With 6:45 to play in the opening quarter Thorson ran the ball in from three yards out and Swanson took the ball in for the two point conversion to give the Rockets an early 8-0 lead.  They increased that lead to 14-0 on a 12 yard run by Gardin with just 2:45 left in the quarter.  Swanson scored on a 3 yard run with three minutes left in the half and Gardin ran in for the two-point conversion to make the score 22-0.  The Rockets built the lead to 30-0 with 15 seconds left in the half on a two-yard pass from Gardin to Chase Janu and a two-point conversion run by Thorson.

In the second half, Gardin broke loose for a 49 yard TD run just one minute into the third quarter and Swanson followed with another two-point conversion run, putting the score at 38-0.  Gardin’s 12 yard scamper to the end zone with 11:30 to go in the game and Swanson’s conversion run made it a 46-0 game.

Lake Park-Audubon finally got on the board with six minutes to play on a 12 yard run by Jaden Disse.

Defensively, the Rockets held the Raiders to 127 rushing yards, 8 passing yards and 9 first downs, while recording three sacks and forcing two fumbles.  Tristian Evavold led Underwood with 6 solo tackles and one sack.  Swanson had 3 solo tackles and 3 assisted tackles, Timothy Devaney finished with 4 solo tackles and Thorson had 3 solo tackles, 1 assisted tackle and a sack.

“Defensively, we were solid as the starting unit didn't give up much all night long and sophomore linebacker Tristian Evavold was a pleasant surprise leading us in tackles,” added Coach Ross.  “Overall a good team win and hopefully we can build on it heading into next weeks’ game with Frazee.”
