The Fergus Falls girls’ tennis team traveled to Willmar for a dual against the Cardinals.  Conditions were cool and extremely windy in Willmar, which made for some challenging match play. The Cardinals showed a strong lineup all the way through, defeating the Otters 6-1.

Ellie Colbeck snagged the lone win for the Otters tonight at first singles, edging out Chloe Hanson in two tight sets 6-4, 6-4.

“Ellie really controlled the match well tonight,” said Head Coach Jamie Lill. “She moved her opponent around effectively and imposed herself at the net, forcing errors from the other side. Ellie played the wind brilliantly and frustrated her opponent with her calm and steady demeanor. This was a big win for Ellie. She’s really starting to make a name for herself in our section and conference.”

The Otters had a couple other close matches that are definitely worth mentioning tonight. Carlie Meis and Olivia Kaliher teamed up once again at first doubles.  The duo dropped a quick first set, but really settled in and played some smart and strategic doubles in the second set, winning it 6-4 and forcing a decisive third set. The Warriors were too good in the third set; winning it with just a single break of serve at 6-4.

“’Carlivia’ is proving to be a solid doubles team at the top of our lineup,” noted Coach Lill. “These girls are always working hard. They dig for every ball and they have fun on the court. Their matches are always competitive. Our fourth singles match was also a close one tonight. 8th grader Amber Anderson found herself in the varsity lineup for the second time this year. After starting strong in the first set, she dropped it 6-2, but found herself in a great battle for the second set before dropping it in a tie break.  Amber showed great composure as a youngster tonight. She fights for each point and has grit.”
