Knight Wrestlers Compete in Individual Tournament at Malecek Camp

Wrestlers from West Central Area/Ashby/Brandon-Evansville participated in the 2019 Malecek Team Camp Individual Tournament this past weekend with six wrestlers winning weight class titles, six finishing as runners-up and nine more claiming third place.  Six Knights ended up in fourth place in their respective weight classes.

"We walked away from the Malecek team camp placing in the top 14 out of 70 teams and going 5-3 in the duals," said Knights Head Coach Brandon Gruchow. "More importantly, our wrestlers found a new level of passion for the sport. We came to camp wanting to find a way to do whatever it takes to get better and a little more...I feel as though that goal was accomplished. This was a new experience for all of us and our team handled it well. The physicality and the desire to win got stronger as the camp went on. Our Knights were fighting for the extra team points and fighting strong not to give up any extra points when they were behind in their matches. I witnessed boys wrestling young men and giving it their all to just stay in the match for their teammates. I heard many talks given to the younger wrestlers by our older more experienced wrestlers helping them work their way through the tough competition and difficulties at camp. Our bond as a team grew stronger and stronger each and everyday. There were team duals, team bonding activities, an individual tournament and we even got a chance to sneak away and jump on a jet boat...all 32 of us. I've never seen these boys have so much fun! The excitement and team bonding that took place would have never happened without our parents and communities support. Thank you all for that! We are all excited to get home and see our families! But we enjoyed our time away working on our skills and team chemistry! We look forward to our young team hitting the mat in November...it should be a great season!"
