Breckenridge Post 53 only had one practice before their first Legion game against Hawley, and it showed dropping the game 14-13 on Wednesday night.

“It wasn’t the start we were looking for tonight,” said Breckenridge Head Coach Kevin Hiedeman. “I knew that we would be a little bit rusty but we made a lot of physical mistakes, and even more mental mistakes tonight. Things like not tagging up at 3rd base on a fly ball, pitcher not covering first base on a ground ball, not covering home on a passed ball, missing signs. Those are mistakes that we can’t make so we’ll get those fixed. All of our pitchers struggled to throw first pitch strikes, got behind in the count and Hawley took advantage of that racking up 14 hits in 6 innings. Defensively, we made some mistakes. There were a lot of hard hit balls that went in the book as hits that we had opportunities to make plays on but didn’t.”

On the positive side, Ty Piechowski had a spectacular night at the plate going 3-3 with a home run and a walk. Mitch Porter also had 3 hits on the night. Andrew Kram had two hits.

“We have a couple practices to get these things fixed as we play six games in seven days next week,” said Hiedeman.

Post 53 has their home opener against Barnesville on Monday at 6:30pm.
