OTC Women Second, Men Third at Sub-Sections

It came down to the last two events but the OTC women's track team scored 98.50 points to beat out Wadena who finished with 93 points for second place at the Sub-Section meet in Sebeka. In each event the top five individuals, and two relays advance to next week's section meet in Fergus Falls.

 

With just the 4x400 relay and triple jump left to be completed the women found themselves trailing Wadena by 11.5 points. After Brooke Hovland, Jorga Gabrielson, Grace VanErp and Kylie Frederick won the 4x400 relay in a time of 4:11.54 that lead got cut down to 4.5. VanErp then won the triple jump with a leap of 34-07 to seal second place for the team.

 

VanErp also qualified for sections in the long jump and was apart of the 4x200 meter relay with Erika Heibel, Hovland, and Fredrick that took first with a time of 1:49.44 to edge out Perham. Hovland took second in the 400 dash to go three for three in qualifying for her events.

 

Jorga Gabrielson captured the 800 title in 2:29.32 and was apart of the 4x800 relay team that took third. Elane Frost broke the six minute barrier for the first time in the mile run where she took fifth with a 5:57.15.

 

In the hurdles Ally Hart and Mia Young both qualified for sections in the 100’s taking fourth and fifth, and Hart doubled back to qualify in the 300’s taking second with 51.62.  

 

Amelia Blaskowski jumped 4-08 to take second in the high jump with Hart also qualifying taking fifth.

 

On the men's side Perham ran away with the team title with 169 points, Wadena finished with 118 to edge out the OTC guys by one point.

 

The Bulldog men had eight individual qualifiers and one relay that will for sure advance to the section meet next Thursday as they wait to see if they get any wild card qualifiers.

 

Leading the way was Nick VanErp who won three events. VanErp first in the 100 dash with a 11.61, first in the 200 dash with a 23.40, first in the long jump with a 20-05, and third in the triple jump with 39-10.

 

The 4x800 relay took second with a 8:26.19, that was consisted of Brady Scholten, Thomas Himmelspach, Eli Carlson and Brennan Amundson. Carlson and Scholten also qualified in the open 800 taking second and fourth. While Amundson won the 400 dash with a 52.16, and Nick Carter took fourth.

 

Connor Drake and Brady VanErp both are moving on to sections. Drake took fourth in the 110 hurdles with a 17.34 and VanErp took second in the 300 hurdles with 45.46.

 

Luke Bjorklund continued his success in the field events as we won high jump with 5-10 and took fourth in both the long and triple jump. Hunter Doll threw a PR of 117-01 to take third in the discus.

 

“Overall today was a good day.” Boys head coach Brady Speicher said. “Our athletes are a little bummed to take third by one point but as we look forward to sections next week I like our chances of getting multiple athletes to state.”
