The Breckenridge Cowboys improved their record to 5-1 with a come from behind section win against East Grand Forks on Friday.

“Friday’s double header was our 4th and 5th games in 4 days against a large school that is twice our size, who plays mostly 3AAA schools,” said Head Coach Kevin Hiedeman. “We knew this was going to be a big challenge.”

The Cowboys lost the first game 12-2. Carter Haugen pitched the majority of that game giving up only 5 earned runs, striking out 4 and walking 4. “Carter pitched better than the numbers looked as our defense struggled to make plays,” said Hiedeman.

The Cowboys rebounded for an 11-10 victory in game 2. Connor Twidwell was on the mound, throwing 5 innings, striking out 4 and walking 5 batters. EGF scored 9 runs but only one of those was earned. “Again, our defense really struggled to make plays, making 8 errors,” reported Coach Hiedeman. Even though being down 9-3 in the top of the 5th the Cowboys explosive offense is never out of the game. They rebounded scoring 5 runs in the top of the 5th to make the score 10-9. In the top of the 7th, Luke Arnhalt led off with a bunt single. Haugen laid down a sacrifice bunt moving pinch runner Max Johnson into scoring position, allowing Hunter Feigum to score Johnson on a single, giving the Cowboys a two run cushion. “I didn’t think one run would be enough in this game, and we were playing for one run in the 7th which turned out to be the difference,” added Hiedeman.

Twidwell reached his pitch count in the 5th inning and Emmit Vig came in to pitch the last two innings. Emmit did a great job in relief, striking out one and walking one, only giving up one hit.

In the 7th, a walk and another error on the Cowboy defense put the tying run on base with one out. A single up the middle scored one run, when Jeremy Stack threw a strike to home plate from deep center field, allowing Jack Aigner to tag the tying run out at home plate. The Cowboys were celebrating and it was mass chaos when the runner on 2nd tried to take 3rd and the Cowboys reacted and threw the runner out, winning the game 11-10. “That is the most unlikely double play that you will see but it could not have come at a better time,” said Hiedeman.  “Despite playing very poor defense, our offense kept us in the game led by Hunter Feigum who was 4 for 5 in the second game and had 5 hits on the day. Jeremy Stack was also 4 for 5 and had 6 hits on the day.” Jake Wendorff and Emmit Vig also had two hits in the game contributing to a 16 hit game for the Cowboys.

The Cowboys are back home on Tuesday for a Heart O' Lakes double header against Frazee.
