Youth and varsity inexperience will be the story for the Pelican Rapids baseball team in 2019 as they lost several key players to graduation after their 11-13 season a year ago.

Seniors Hayden Christenson (P, IF, OF), Reggie Funk (P, C, OF) and Damien Britten (P, IF) all return for the Vikings.

“We are going to be very young after out three seniors,” commented Head Coach Adam Johnson.  “We have a very consistent player in Hayden Christenson to lead these young guys.  Hayden has batted over .350 all three of his varsity years and will be our anchor in the lineup and on the mound this year.  Many of our guys have not played an inning on varsity and are going to have to adjust the speed and level of play quickly, which I think we will do.  Pitching and hitting will be our biggest hurdles as many players will be taking the varsity mound for the first time.  It’s a challenge I think they are ready for and willing to take on.  We are ready to play some baseball and excited to see what some of these young guys have to offer.”

Players hoping to crack the varsity lineup included sophomores Logan Fahje (P, OF), Liam Sytsma (P, IF) and Weston Funk (P, IF), and freshmen Carson McNeal (P, IF) and Brock Sjolie (P, IF).

Johnson will be assisted by Steve Babb, Mitch Verdorn and Nick Groth.
