The M State Fergus Falls Lady Spartan softball team traveled to the Irish Dome in Rosemount to open their season and came away with two wins and one loss. They beat Riverland College 14-2, Hibbing Community College 8-0 and lost to Anoka Ramsey Technical and Community College 16-5.

The Lady Spartans used clutch hitting in game one to beat Riverland Community College out of Austin Minnesota 14-2. Sophomore Macky Warne was strong as she threw all five innings, allowing only three hits. The top of the Lady Spartans order, Warne, Allison Stafki, and Alexa Mortenson each collected three hits apiece and scored a combined 8 runs. Anna Carlson, the cleanup hitter, took advantage of those baserunners and drove in four runs. McKenna Erickson also knocked in a pair of runs.

In game two, freshman Alexa Mortenson from Ulen pitched very well and collected the shutout as the Lady Spartans defeated the Hibbing Community College Cardinals 8-0 in five innings. The top of the order of Warne and Stafki once again did a great job of setting the table for the heart of the order. This time it was Mortenson who did the damage as she collected three RBI for the game. The lineup was fairly balanced all the way through with Paige Schultz picking up a couple of walks in the number 9 spot in the order. Mortenson struck out seven Cardinal batters in her five innings of work.

Game three found the Lady Spartans overmatched by a good and experienced Anoka Ramsey team. Anoka won the game 16-5, but that didn’t mean the game didn’t have some Lady Spartan highlights. Third baseman Morgan Smith turned in a very nice defensive game and collected two hits for the day. Freshman Rylee Lindquist from Perham crushed a two run, line drive homerun that cleared the fence and crashed the far wall of the dome. It was Rylee’s first ever homerun.

The Lady Spartans will travel to Rochester to play in a tournament April 5 and 6.
