Mike Schaub begins his 13th season as head coach for the Barnesville girls track and field team.  The Trojans will be looking to improve on a third place finish in the Section 6A True Team Track and Field Meet and a third place in the Sub-Section Meet.  Seventeen athletes advanced to the Section 8A Meet where Barnesville took eleventh place.

“We had improvements occur throughout the season and with all of the girls accelerating to their full potential,” said Coach Schaub.  “They all exhibited good work ethic with solid performances. Returning letter winners are among the athletes to watch this year, in addition to a talented group of seventh and eighth graders.  Emily Schoenecker (sprints, jumps, relays) and Jordan Tschumperlin (sprints, jumps, relays), the top two point getters for the 2018 season, should have another good year.  Claire Meyer (hurdles, jumps) is another girl to watch this year as she scored many individual and team points.  After setting the school record in the triple jump last season, Samantha Passa (distance, jumps, relays) will be another contender in the triple jump as well as relays.”

Tessa Herman (discus, shot put), Elora Passa (discus, jumps), Emily Spilde (pole vault, relays), Natalie Votava (pole vault) and Claire Meyer are the senior members of the squad.  Juniors include Kya Anderson (discus, shot put), Emerson Biewer (shot put, discus), Jenna Poppel (high jump), Grace Schindler (sprints, relays), Lilly Rutherford (discus, shot put, distance) and Kyuwon Lee (pole vault, sprints).  Kaylee Johnson (distance), Kimberly Maesse (pole vault, relays), Samantha Pass, Alivia Pederson (shot put, discus), Olivia Sorenson (sprints, jumps, relays), Jordan Tschumperlin, Hailey Dunham (sprints, jumps), Sidney Ahles (pole vault, distance), Karis Asplin (sprints, jumps), Claudia Hurtado (discus, shot put) and Amber Nauertz (high jump, sprints) form the sophomore class.  Freshmen Emily Bredman (distance, relays), Mathea Jablonsky (sprints, jumps, relays), Kaitlyn Leverson (sprints, jumps, relays), Sydney Rustad (sprints, jumps, relays), Emily Schoenecker and Anna Stanford (distance, relays).

“I had several girls attend camps at Concordia, NDSU and MSUM to better their skills for competition,” said Schaub.  “I also look for our teams to be strong in all areas, throwing, jumping, distance and sprinting. We have a lot of depth and a team with a good work ethic, great dedication, and a lot of talent.  We also have a lot of ambitious seventh and eighth graders looking to push the upperclassmen to compete to their full potential.”

Eight graders looking to contribute include Mya Anderson (distance, relays), Rumely Biewer (discus, shot put, sprints, relays), Krysta Braton (discus, shot put), Lilly Markey (pole vault, jumps, relay), Kylie Morgan (shot put, discus), Emma Rietz (sprints, jumps, relays), Emily Smith (sprints, jumps, relays) and Tori Wacker (distance, relays).  Prospective seventh graders are Ava Foster, Natalie Froslie, Kenadee Gray, Aleena Heising, Hadley Pearson, Olivia Power, Lindsey Rotz, Mallory Rasmusson and Carlie Vigessa.

Schaub will be assisted by McKinzie Tangen (hurdles, long jump, triple jump), Scott Amundson (Head Boys Coach, shot put, discus), Chad Suter (Assistant Boys Coach, long jump, triple jump, high jump) and Nick Paur (Junior High Coach).

Coach Schaub says Pelican Rapids is the top team in the Heart O’ Lakes Conference and in Section 8A.
