The Pelican Rapids boys track and field team will need to replace their top scorer and state meet competitor Carlan Haugrud, who competed in sprints and long jump, and Carson Haugrud, who led the team in throwing events and sprint relay.  Head Coach David Haugen begins his seventeenth year as head coach of the Vikings.

The Vikings return Eli Sytsma, the second leading scorer on the team last year.  Sytsma will compete in the high jump, triple jump and a variety of races on the track.  Zane Brosowske and Habram Martinez, along with Sytsma will be looked at to provide both leadership and good performance on meet day.  Brosowske will be busy with pole vault and a variety of jumps and relays.

“There are a lot of things he can do so we will need to quickly decide where he can have the most success,” said Coach Haugen.  “Martinez will focus on the middle distance races in both the open races and relays. David Johnston had a very successful cross country season and we are looking for good things this spring.  I expect him to put most of his effort into middle distance races this year rather than the true distance events.”

Haugen (horizontal jump, high jump) will be assisted by Jon Moe (sprints, relays, hurdles, pole vault), Cody Schaffer (shot put, discus), John Peter (Head Girls Coach, distance, middle distance) and Andy Rarick (Junior High).

“The attitude in the early part of our practices has been excellent,” said Haugen.  “I’m really excited to see how we can develop as the season progresses. We have some new upper classmen and some young athletes that look good in our early season work outs and it’s going to be fun to watch us develop and see how far we can progress throughout the season.”

Haugen say Perham and DGF will be among the top teams in the Heart O’ Lakes Conference, while East Grand Forks, Ada-Borup and DGF are consider top teams in the section.
