Alexandria claimed the Section 8AA Girls’ Track and Field Championship on Saturday in Fergus Falls, recording 137 points. Willmar took second with 89 and Brainerd was third with 77. The Cardinals, who saw Sophia Vinje qualify for state in the discus and Aleah Miller in the 3200 meter run on Thursday, qualified five more individuals on Saturday, including Aleah Miller and Jaelyn Miller in the 1600 meter run, Elena Fuglestad in the 400 meter dash, Alexis Cole in the 300 meter hurdles and Hailie Kent in the triple jump.
Fergus Falls had Svea Smestad qualify as the shot put champion, joining Ainsley Hansen who qualified for the state high jump on Thursday.
The Moorhead boys’ track and field team won the Section 8AA title on Saturday in Fergus Falls with 151 points. They were followed by Willmar (99.50) and Bemidji (77). Alexandria finished fifth with 66 points, qualifying three individuals for the state meet, including William Heydt with a first place in the triple jump, and runner-up finishes for Nolan Morical in the 100 meter dash and Jack Theien in the 400 meter dash.
The top two finishers in each individual event and the top relay team in each relay qualify for the state meet.
The first session of the Section 8AA Track and Field Meet was held on Wednesday in Sartell with preliminary races being held in most events, but a few finals were determined as well. Session Two of the Section 8AA Meet will be held in Fergus Falls on Saturday. The top two finishers in each individual event, along with those meeting the state qualifying standards, and the top team in each relay event will compete at the State Track and Field Meet next week.
