Jayna Gronewold scored 29 points, pulled down 6 rebounds and came up with 6 steals on Friday night, leading the Rothsay girls basketball team to a 55-49 victory over Battle Lake on the Battlers home floor.

Kenadi Carlson contributed 7 points and 7 rebounds, and Grace Lider added 7 points. Rothsay made 40% of their shots from the field.

“We jumped out to an early lead,” said Head Coach Anita Heier. “We played with a lot of composure down the stretch to hold on for the win.”

Allison Marso led Battle Lake with 22 points and Grace VanErp had 11. Tessa Kortlever had a nice first half, scoring 7 of her 8 points in the period.

“We fell behind early and struggled to score, falling behind by as much as 14 in the half,” commented Battle Lake Head Coach David Marso.  “We were able to chip away at the lead and got it to 9 by the break, 23-32.  In the second half, we slowly crawled back into the game and late, we had the lead down to 2, but two straight conversions by the Tigers and we were down again and were never able to recover. Jayna Gronewold had a spectacular game and made some big shots when the game got down to the wire.”

Battle Lake will host Hancock on Monday night, while Rothsay will host Park Christian School on Tuesday.
