The Battle Lake boys basketball team snapped their three game losing skid on Friday night with a thrilling 62-61 victory over Brandon-Evansville.

With the game tied 60-60 the Battlers committed a foul that put the Chargers on the line with a one-and-one opportunity. B-E made the first free throw but missed the second. Battle Lake had no time outs remaining so Nick VanErp drove to the basket and scored a layup with three seconds remaining to give them the win. VanErp scored 19 of his game high 24 in the second half. Riley Leabo and Brady Scholten each had 11.

Tanner Bitzan led the Chargers with 15 points. He was joined in double figures by Marshall Riedel and Keagan Schiele with 13 and 11 points, respectively.  Schiele had a team high 7 steals and Bitzan completed a double-double with 11 rebounds.  Both Bitzan and Schiele led the Chargers with 5 assists.

“They are a tough team and it could have gone either way,” said Battle Lake Head Coach CJ Peeters. “We wanted to go for the win and we were fortunate to get the ball and get up the floor quickly. Nick had an incredible second half, but our guys all bought in. It was a great game and we know we beat a really tough team. They matched every run, we battled and hung together, and Nick finished it off for us.”

Battle Lake (6-11) will host Hillcrest on Tuesday, Underwood on Thursday and Rothsay on Friday as they begin a stretch of four straight home games and six of their next seven on their home court.

"This one is tough," said Brandon-Evansville Head Coach Trent Hintermeister.  "We had a double digit lead in the first half.  We just got outworked and they deserved to win this game.  Give them credit, they made plays in the second half to get them back in it.  In the next 13 days we will play 7 games.  This is a tough stretch and I'm excited to see how our guys respond."

Brandon-Evansville (8-10) will play at Underwood on Tuesday, will host Rothsay on Thursday and entertain Ashby on Friday in a busy week of Little Eight Conference games.
