The Hillcrest boys basketball team handed Underwood a 55-35 defeat on Friday night as the Rockets hosted their first annual Coaches versus Cancer game.

“We used this game to raise money and awareness for the fight against cancer,” commented Underwood Head Coach Evan Meece. “Coaches vs. Cancer is a program funded by the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) that empowers coaches, their teams and communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer. Since its inception in 1993, Coaches vs. Cancer has raised more than $60 million to support the American Cancer Society’s work to save lives from cancer.”

The Rockets were led in the game by Canaan Kugler and Krosby Aasness with 8 points each and Daxton Olson with 7 points.

“We played hard tonight, but we just couldn’t get enough shots to fall our way,” said Coach Meece. “I’m proud of the effort the boys put out there, playing in front of a nice, large crowd. I’m hoping that we can use the effort we played with tonight to build into the home stretch and continue to play good basketball.”

Sander Frustol scored a team high 13 to lead the Comets, while Gabriel Prestonand Thomas Zwiers contributed 11 points and 3 assists each.  Frustol also had 6 rebounds and 8 steals, while Micah Foss distributed a team high 4 assists and came away with 3 steals.  Logan Disabella added 5 points, 3 assists and 3 steals.  The Comets had 18 steals and assisted on 16 baskets as a team.

Coach Gregg Preston of the Comets said, “Our defensive pressure was good early in the first half. We also had good offensive balance tonight.”

“I was happy to see the community come out and support the game tonight for our first coaches vs. cancer game,” concluded Coach Meece. “I’m hoping for the future that we can build this event into a bigger one every year.”

Hillcrest (9-5) will host Ortonville on Monday night, while Underwood (2-12) will face Wheaton/Herman-Norcross at 2:00pm Saturday at UM-Morris.
