The West Central Area Knights used a dominant second half defensive performance in a 56-41 win over Hillcrest on Tuesday night in Barrett.  The Comets led 20-15 until the Knights closed the first half on a 10-4 run to hold a slim 25-24 lead.  The Knights started the second half on a 14-4 run to extend their lead to 39-28 and pulled away to win 56-41.

Knight Coach Kraig Hunter said, "We told our guys at halftime that we didn't shoot particularly well in the first half, but still used some grit to hang in there and fight to get a one point lead.  I really thought we contested shots well and rebounded very dominantly in the second half.  When our guys set their minds to it, they can be a dominant rebounding team."

The Knights held a 41-34 rebounding advantage overall led by Teigen Moritz's 11 rebounds.  "Like always, Teigen is our rock.  Solid every night", said Hunter.

The Knights shot 22-59 for 37% (6-16 on threes), while holding the Comets to 17-55 for 31% and only 3-19 on threes.  The Knights made 6-9 free throws and the Comets 4-13.  Turnovers were 10 for WCA and 11 for Hillcrest.

Scoring for the Knights were Jack VanKempen with 14 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists; Jacob Bright 13 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists; Grant Beuckens 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists; Teigen Moritz 8 points and 11 rebounds; Gage Staples 4 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals; Tate Christenson 3 points and 3 assists; Gavin Paulson 2 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals; and Blake Koloskicontributed 1 rebound, 1 assist and took a charge.

Scoring for Hillcrest were Sander Frustol 14 points, Gabe Preston 8 points, Thomas Zwiers 8 points, Logan Disabella 7 points, Nick Foss 2 points, and Micah Foss 2 points.  The Comets made only 28% (17-60) of their shots from the field.  Frustol completed a double-double with 11 rebounds and added 3 assists.  Zwiers had 8 rebounds and Pretson dished out 4 assists.

"Both teams played with great intensity tonight," said Hillcrest Head Coach Gregg Preston.  "WCA's depth, defense, balance, and offensive execution were too much for us to overcome.  We must begin to shoot the ball with better consistency or every night will be a struggle."
