Hat Trick by Richards Helps Otters Defeat Pirates 6-4

Ian Richards scored a hat trick on Saturday in Crookston to lead the Fergus Falls boys hockey team to a 6-4 win over the Pirates. 

Richards got the scoring started with a shot from the right point, assisted by Mike DeBrito at 12:21 of the opening period. Crookston pulled even with just 34 seconds left in the period when Ben Andringa scored from Eric Delorme and Jack Doda

In the second period, Logan Schake gave the Otters a 2-1 lead 1:44 into the stanza with assists from Cole Zierden and Matthew Niblock. At 6:21 Delorme scored from Brock Heppner to tie the game at 2-2. 

The third period started with the Otters scoring just eighteen seconds in on a backhanded goal by Isaac Young from Richards. Delorme tied the game at three off an Otter turnover in front of their own goal. Heppner assisted on the goal that made it 3-3. Richards notched his second of the game with assists from DeBrito and Isaac Young, giving the Otters a 4-3 advantage. Just 22 seconds later Ben Andringa scored the tying goal from Ty Hamre and Jack Doda. At 11:01 of the period Sterling Andrews was battling for the puck behind the net when the puck flipped up over the net and off the back of the goaltender into the Crookston net. Andrews was given credit for the goal that put the Otters ahead 4-3 and Schake was awarded an assist. Richards completed his hat trick with a goal at 11:20, unassisted. 

Fergus Falls had 31 shots on goal and Crookston had 30. Scott VanVoorhis stopped 26 of the Pirates shots as he earned his first varsity victory in the net. 

The Otters and Pirates tied 6-6 in the JV game. 

Fergus Falls has home games on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday of the coming week against Sartell, Sauk Rapids-Rice and Hutchinson.
