Portales and Hartwell Earn Medals at Big Bear

Two Fergus Falls wrestlers made it to the podium at Big Bear on Saturday with Dustin Portales (285) finishing as runner-up in his weight class, and Kaden Hartwell (152) taking sixth place.

Portales opened the tournament with an 8-3 decision over Austin Surgenor of Andover and then pinned Jakob Swalla of Minnewaska Area to advance to the quarterfinals.  Portales won a 3-1 sudden victory match over Craig Orlando of Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie to move onto the semifinal round where he pinned Jared Siebert of United North Central.  In the first place match Portales lost a 4-1 decision to Bryce Benhart of Lakeville North.

Hartwell recorded pins over Nikowa Fortier of Mahnomen-Waubun, Torrey Carlson of United North Central and Tommy Carmody of Virginia Area in his first three matches, and then lost a 16-6 major decision to Chandler Mooney of Roseau in his semifinal match.  In the consolation semifinals Hartwell was pinned by Cole Johnson of Thief River Falls.  He then lost an 8-4 decision to Brandon Tomala of Pierz in the fifth place match.
