Lady Knights Win Non-Conference Battle with Breckenridge

The Lady Knights traveled to Breckenridge to take on the Cowgirls on Friday night in a non-conference battle. 

The Cowgirls jumped out to an early lead and grew it to a 16 point margin two-thirds of the way through the first half. The Lady Knights would gain some momentum going into halftime cutting the deficit to 38-27. The two teams battled and right out of the gates in the second half. The lead would get cut to 5 and grow back up to 12 points throughout the first part of the second half. The Lady Knights began a run and cut the lead to 66-63 with just under four minutes to play. The Lady Knights created some late turnovers and took their first lead 70-68. Some free throws and big rebounds down the stretch led to a dramatic finish with the Lady Knights eking out a 73-70 win. 

The Lady Knights were led by Lexi Bright with 21 points 5 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 assists, Ella Van Kempen with 17 points, 4 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 assistsk, Brynn Fernholz put in 11 points, a rebound and a steal, Teagan Nelson had 5 points, 5 rebounds and an assist, Hailey Bennett had 4 points, 3 rebounds, an assist and a steal, Morgan Woodle had 3 points, 2 rebounds, 3 steals, a block and an assist, Kaitlyn Sanstead scored 3 points and grabbed a rebound, Kaitlyn Hansen scored 3 points and had 2 rebounds, and Elizabeth Rustan had 2 points, 2 steals, an assist and a rebound. 

“Tonight the girls fought to the bitter end and there were a lot of encouraging details. Breckenridge did a nice job of challenging shots tonight and putting the ball in the basket,” said Head Coach Eric Schoenbauer. “There are things we can learn from this game which makes it very valuable and we will take those lessons and move forward.”
