Warriors Put 53 Shots on Goal to Beat Otters 9-3

Brainerd outshot Fergus Falls 53-11 on the way to a 9-3 Central Lakes Conference boys hockey victory on Tuesday night in Brainerd. 

The Otters got the scoring started at 4:09 of the first period when Aaron Shelstad converted a centering pass out of the corner by Declan Young. Brainerd pulled even on a Mike Laber goal from Westin Andres and Anthony Menghini at 5:35. Brainerd scored again at the twelve minute mark when Mason Kruse tallied a goal from Wyatt Andres and Riley Andres. Wyatt Andres then scored at 15;04 from Kruse and Riley Andres to make it 3-1 and a Westin Andres goal from Brady Anderson and Nick Hastings at 16:15 gave the Warriors a 4-1 lead after the first period of play. 

Fergus Falls cut the lead to 4-2 when Mike DeBrito’s forechecking effort paid off in a goal by Isaac Young just 55 seconds into the second period. Brainerd regained their three goal margin on an unassisted goal by Westin Andres at 5:50. At 7:10 Anderson scored from Menghini and Gavin Andres to make the score, 6-2. Gavin Andres then setup Jack Olson for the Warriors seventh goal of the night at 11:44 and Kruse scored an unassisted goal at 14:31 to close out the second period with Brainerd leading 8-2. 

Laber notched the final Brainerd goal, from Menghini and Joe Klang at 6:48 of the third period and Chase Jensen scored for the Otters at 7:25 with Shelstad and Declan Young assisting. 

Junior Scott Van Voorhis stopped 44 Brainerd shots on goal in the game. 

The Otters (1-3) will travel to Willmar for another conference game on Thursday night.
