The West Central Area girls basketball team won a close battle with Underwood on Monday night, beating the Rockets 54-48 in Underwood.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair and with a made basket with five seconds left the Lady Knights led 25-23.  The first four minutes of the second half began with WCA building a double digit advantage.  The Rockets cut into the lead with some big shots and by attacking the Lady Knights on the defensive end, however, the visitors were able to hang on to record the win.

"We came out with the thought to be aggressive and be active on defense," said West Central Area Head Coach Eric Schoenbauer.  "The girls took a few moments to allow those things to trulyhappen, but when it did it was a thing of beauty.  The girls did a great job rotating and anticipating tonight, which is something we have been emphasizing."

The Lady Knights were led by Lexi Bright (18 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 assists), Brynn Fernholz (11 points, 2 assists), Ella Van Kempen (10 points, 10 rebounds, 3 blocks, 3 steals), Hailey Bennett (9 points, 3 rebounds), Kennedy Ulrich (4 points, 2 rebounds), Kaitlyn Sanstead (2 points, 4 assists) and Morgan Woodle (2 points, 5 assists, 3 steals, 4 rebounds).  Kaitlyn Hansen grabbed two rebounds and Elizabeth Rustan had 2 assists and 2 rebounds.

"Teagan Nelson did a great job on the defensive end of the floor and handled the Rockets pressure with a great sense of maturity," added Schoenbauer.  "The whole team hleped the Lady Knights to victory in Underwood."

Underwood shot 29% (15-51) from the field and made 16-of-26 (61.5%) of their free throws.  They were led by Kayla Rocholl (20 points, 4 steals), Morgan Evavold (9 points, 5 rebounds), Brooke Hovland (6 points, 4 rebounds, 5 steals) and Ceri Meech (6 points, 3 rebounds, 7 steals).

"We did not do a good job versus their pressure, especially in the second half," commented Underwood Head Coach Brian Hovland.  "We will need to do a better job of controlling tempo and taking what the opposing team is giving.  We will get better, I'm confident in that, as we have a ton of potential."
