On Thursday night the West Central Area Lady Knights traveled to Glenwood to face the Minnewaska Area Lakers in a non-conference game. The Lakers came out on top in a highly competitive matchup, posting a 63-53 win over WCA.

The game started out with the Lady Knights jumping out to a double digit lead at 17-6. The Lady Knights would exchange baskets with the Lakers and led 29-20 when the Lakers went on a 10-3 run. The halftime score was 32-30 in favor of the Lady Knights. The Lady Knights came out of the half and started to build a lead, 41-34. Then the Lakers started cutting into the lead and take the lead with pressure and offensive efficiency. The Lakers had a 49-45 lead after a 15-4 run with under 8 minutes to play. The Lady Knights took some chances in the final minutes of the game to try and even the score, but they led to free-throws and lay-ups for the Lakers.

Coach Eric Schoenbauer said, “Tonight we played hard for long spurts and our effort was unquestioned. These games show us that effort isn’t the only thing we need to beat tough teams, but instead we all need to be doing it together and on the same page. There are things we can work on and that I can do more effectively to help us going forward.”

The Lady Knights were led by Lexi Bright with 15 points. Ella Van Kempen put in 14 points, Hailey Bennett scored 10 points, Brynn Fernholz added 4 points, and Teagan Nelson and Kennedy Ulrich scored 3 points apiece. Kaitlyn Hansen and Elizabeth Rustan each added 2 points.
