The Fergus Falls boys hockey team went 0-for-7 on the power play Saturday afternoon in Detroit Lakes as they lost a 4-1 decision to the Lakers in their season opener at the Kent Freeman Memorial Arena.

“DL came out fast and I was happy with how we matched them physically,” said Fergus Falls Head Coach Mike Donaghue. “Ian Stumbo did a nice job in the net for his first varsity game.”

Stumbo had 23 saves and the Otters put 38 shots on Laker goalie Blake Itzan

Following a scoreless first period the Lakers got on the board at 5:09 of the second when Jackson Carlblom scored an unassisted goal. Will Green made it 2-0 at 14:47 with assists from Trey Seebold and Nick LundDeclan Young netted the first Fergus Falls goal of the season, assisted by Chase Jensen at 15:03 to trim the Laker lead to 2-1.

In the third period DL scored at 12:03 when Drew Schwan put the puck past Stumbo. Jake Green and Reed Benson recorded assists on the goal. Will Stowman lit the lamp for the Lakers at 14:53 with Roland Cormier and Maddux Kovash earning assists.

Fergus Falls will open their home season with a Tuesday contest against St. Cloud Cathedral.
