Caledonia Defeats Barnesville for 4th Straight State Title

The Caledonia Warriors won their fourth straight Class AA Football championship on Friday afternoon with a 21-0 victory over the Barnesville Trojans at US Bank Stadium in downtown Minneapolis. The Warriors extended their winning streak to 54 games and won their seventh title in the last nine years and their ninth title in school history. For Barnesville (11-3) it marked their third state runner-up finish in school history. 

 

Caledonia took a 7-0 lead with 4:53 to play in the first half when Nick McCabescored on a 22 yard run on third-and-nine, and Ryan Wagner booted the extra point. 

Following a scoreless third quarter the Warriors extended their lead to 14-0 when Tate Meiners scored on a fourth-and-one from the one yard line with just 4:29 remaining in the game. Wagner was again accurate with his extra point kick. Payton Schott then returned an interception 43 yards to clinch the win. Wagner’s third PAT kick of the day put the final score at 21-0. 

McCabe ran for 115 yards on 14 carries and the Warriors finished with 156 yards rushing, 84 yards passing and 240 yards of total offense. Noah King completed 9-of-19 passes and Meiners had 3 catches for 44 yards. 

Barnesville managed just 132 yards of offense, all on the ground. They were led by sophomore quarterback Adam Tonsfeldt with 88 yards on 18 carries. 

Defensively, Hunter Zenzen recovered a fumble which was forced by Brooks Martinson, and Preston Snobl had an interceptions and a team high 9 tackles. Zenzen also had a pass break-up and Chase Brenner was credited with two pass break-ups. Adrian O’Brien added 5 tackles. 

Evan Denstad and Ryan Wagner each had fumble recoveries for Caledonia. Denstad was the leading tackler with 9, followed by Kyle Cavanaugh and Nick McCabe with 8 apiece. Sacks were recorded by Ezra Dvorak and Isaiah Forrester.

Wagner of Caledonia and Grant Inniger of Barnesville are the recipients of the Most Valuable Teammate award for the 2018 Prep Bowl Class AA Football Championship.  The award, in its third year, is sponsored by Wells Fargo and the Minnesota State High School League.  The MVT award goes to student-athletes that demonstrate leadership and sportsmanship and who are respectful, supportive and committed to their team, putting the team before themselves.  The head coaches of the teams participating in the Prep Bowl championships selected one player from their team to receive this honor.
