The Fergus Falls girls hockey team improved their early season record to 3-1 with a 5-3 win over Sartell/Sauk Rapids on Tuesday night.

Anna Orth got the visitors on the board at 14:45 of the opening period with an assist going to Brooke Walters. Fergus Falls evened the score on a power play goal by Ellie Andersen. Assists went to Jade Zierden and Sophie Rausch. Rausch broke the all-time assist record with her helper which came with just nine seconds left in the first period.

Sartell/Sauk Rapids took a 2-1 lead on Orth’s second goal of the game at 4:20 of the second period, this time assisted by Lauren Wensel. Jade Zierden made it a 2-2 contest from Vivian Karsnia and Maddie Hulter just 23 seconds later. Mallory Heder scored from Orth and Rachel Wieland at 12:07, putting Sartell/Sauk Rapids in front by the score of 3-2. Rausch tallied an unassisted goal at 14:20 to end the second period with the score knotted up at 3-3.

A power play goal from Amy Johnson proved to be the game winner for the Otters. Assists were awarded to Piper Andrews and Vivian Karsnia on the goal at 7:24 of the third period. Rausch added an empty net goal from Andrews at 16:22 to make the final score, 5-3.

Fergus Falls put 42 shots on goal, including 24 in the final seventeen minutes. Sartell/Sauk Rapids managed only 11 shots on the night. Mady Eklund and Jadyn McKeever shared the goaltending duties for Fergus Falls and Madison DeMaraisstopped 37 shots in the Sartell/Sauk Rapids net.

“We played from behind all night until we took the lead in the third period,” reported Head Coach Tim Lill. “The girls showed a lot of character in not letting that deter their goal of beating the Sabres for the first time in at least five years. The leadership of all the seniors is paying off.”

The Otters will travel to Willmar for another Central Lakes Conference contest next Tuesday night.
