The Fergus Falls girls basketball team won 21 games last season and finished as Section 8AAA runners-up, losing a 46-45 decision to the Alexandria Cardinals in the title game. They return the majority of their starters and 12 letter winners in all, however, lost 3-time captain and 4-year all-conference point guard Kate Strand to graduation. Strand, who finished her high school career with 1684 points, 481 assists and 265 steals will play college ball at Concordia College in Moorhead.

“This team plans to compete with the top teams in both the Central Lakes Conference and also Section 8AAA,” said Head Coach Brad Strand. “The strengths of this team will be their athleticism and work ethic. Keys to a successful season will be to keep all of our girls healthy. The girls need to enjoy playing hard for each other whenever they step on the basketball court. The off-season time working on fundamentals and strength is another important key to having success during the season.”

Seniors Lily Pearson (C, 13ppg, 9rpg) and Sam Evavold (G/F, 8ppg, 4rpg, 4apg, 2spg), junior Sabrina Fronning (G, 8ppg, 3rpg, 4apg, 3spg), and freshmen Tori Ratz (G, 10ppg, 2rpg, 2apg) and Ellie Colbeck (PG, 7ppg, 3rpg, 2apg) all started at times last season and all played extensive varsity minutes.

“Lily had a strong junior season and is an awesome rebounder,” said Coach Strand. “Lily has a strong work ethic and she has put in the time making improvements to her game. Sam was a full time starter for us last year and is a very dependable player who will be looked to often during her senior season. She shoots the ball efficiently, handles the ball well and can cover many different players on defense. Sabrina is an extremely gifted athlete who possesses quickness that you can’t teach and has excellent anticipation on the defensive end of the court. Tori was our third leading scorer last season as an eighth-grader and she has spent countless hours in the gym working on her game. Ellie ended her eighth-grade season as a starter for the Otters and she also spent countless hours working on her game in the gym. We are excited to see those two freshmen grow as varsity players.”

Coach Strand will be looking to seniors Emma Norgard and Nycole Mouritsen, juniors Gretchen DavisOlivia KaliherCarlie Meis and Andreya Lockett, and sophomore Paige Pearson to be varsity contributors. Senior Amzie Aho is back after missing last season with an injury. Kenzie BraegerAbby Tysdal and Anna Anderson round out the varsity roster.

Strand says Alexandria is still the team to beat in the CLC and Section 8AAA, “Well, until somebody can dethrone them they are the champs! They are so well coached. They have excellent guard play and the best post play in the section. They are so strong and physical. Bemidji also has some very talented players and they play hard. They have some excellent guard play and shoot it very efficiently from beyond the arc.”

Strand will be assisted by Josh SteerKevin PearsonAlyssa Huseby and Dan Sternberg.
