The Pelican Rapids Vikings hosted their first round of section 6A play offs Thursday, October 25th. The Vikings battled against the Falcons of Park Christian after Park Christian defeated LPA in the play in round on Monday. The Vikings and Falcon matched up the first match of the season with a tight 5 set match, but this time around the Vikings recorded a 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-19) win.

“We knew the Falcons are very scrappy and athletic and we would have to stay in system and aggressively attack at them,” reported Head Coach Heidi Isaman. “The Vikings passed very well to get us in system most of the first set. Grace PetersonKaylie IsamanRiley Berg and Adriana Torres did a great job of receiving the ball tonight to give our setter lots of offensive choices. The First set we made a few hitting errors to start but Anna Stephenson finally connected and that broke the seal for us. From there the Vikings hit well but still were not hitting to the Falcons’ open spots on the court. We knew we needed to be smarter with where we place the ball in set two and hitters Ryley Paulson and Anna Stephenson did a great job of hitting the ball aggressively to their open spots. Adriana Torres played a great all-around game tonight as well. She hit aggressively, blocked well for us and definitely did her job on the defensive end. Set 3 started with a miscommunication and the Vikings were out of rotation. This delay of game really took the wind out of our sail for a bit and we lost a little of our momentum for a while. We made some mistakes on serve receive and did not attack well out of system. We got a bit passive on offense and were not expecting the ball like we should have been on defense. It took us a while to get back in the grove but a big kill by Greta Tollefson got us a going and the Vikings began to fight back after being down by 3. The Vikings did a good job passing again and got our team back in system and swinging. Kaylie Isaman played solid defense all night for us and setter Sarah Thompson did a great job of running the show the entire game.”

Isaman (18 digs, 3 aces), Peterson (8 digs, 3 aces), Thompson (6 digs, 19 set assists), Paulson (5 digs, 6 kills), Torres (7 kills) and Stephenson (5 kills, 2 blocks) led the way for the Vikings.

“This was a great battle tonight from both ends,” concluded Coach Isaman. “The Falcons fought hard and made some big athletic plays. We will continue our post season journey Friday against New York Mills in Perham at 6:00pm.”
