The Pelican Rapids Vikings traveled to Fergus Falls on Thursday to participate in the BlocktoberFest Tourney Thursday, October 18.

The Vikings played Detroit Lakes the first round of pool play.

“We started strong by getting the Lakers out of system with our aggressive serving and hitting,” said Head Coach Heidi Isaman. “Kaylie Isaman and Grace Peterson passed the ball very well to give setter Sarah Thompson lots of choices on the offense. Thompson did a good job of mixing up the offense to get all hitters in. Adriana Torres and Riley Berg hit the ball very well while Greta Tollefson was our block leader.”

The Vikings led most of set 1 but made a few hitting errors and then missed 3 passes in a row to let the Lakers slide in to win 25-22. Set 2 the Vikings started flat and were not as aggressive at the net as they lost 17-25.

“We had trouble blocking their aggressive outside hitters and we did not cover well offensively,” said Coach Isaman. “The Lakers blocked well and we did not mix up our offense as well.”

Round 2 of pool play the Vikings played Win-E-Mac. The Vikings won both sets 25-10 and 25-12.

“We started strong again serving the ball very aggressively and hitting very well,” said Isaman. “Ryley Paulson hit the ball very well on the outside and was our kill leader with 9 kills. Libero Kaylie Isaman read the ball well and served aggressively. She was our dig leader with 19 and ace leader with 4. The Vikings stayed in system most of both sets and all hitters got in the offense.”

The Vikings got into the Silver Bracket and played Park Rapids the first round. The Vikings could never get in a rhythm and lost both sets 15-25, and 8-25.

“The girls really struggled with serve receive the entire game and we did not get ourselves in system as much as we needed to be,” noted Coach Isaman. “The Panthers took advantage and hit the ball very well. We also really struggled setting the block for our quick offense and the Panthers continued to attack.”

In their last match Pelican Rapids beat Crosby-Ironton 25-15, 25-18.

“The Vikings started strong again with some great aggressive serving to get them out of system,” commented Isaman. “We played great defense all game and were very aggressive at the net. Adriana Torres and Ryley Paulson were our kill leaders with 6 each and played aggressive the entire game. Sarah Thompson did a great job of running the court and mixing up the offense while libero Kaylie Isaman read the ball very well and picked up 15 digs. All blockers were engaged and Greta Tollefson and Adriana Torres did a great job getting some big blocks for us. Anna Stephenson helped set the ball with confidence and had some huge kills on the back side of the court for us.”

The Vikings ended the regular season with a 17-7 record and took the #4 seed in the 6A north subsection. The Vikings will start the post season on Thursday.
