The Pelican Rapids Vikings traveled to Breckenridge for their last conference matchup of the season Tuesday. The Vikings played Breck earlier this season in a tourney and split with them so they knew this was going to be a back and forth battle.

The Cowgirls and the Vikings went point for point for the first 10 points of the first set but midway through the set the Vikings had trouble passing the ball and spent a lot of time out of system. The Cowgirls capitalized and attacked hard out of the back side. Missing 4 serves in set one also hurt the Vikings. The Cowgirls went on a 6 point serving run to win set one 25-19. “We knew we needed to pass the ball better to get ourselves in system and our outside hitter had to get more aggressive out of system,” said Head Coach Heidi Isaman of Pelican Rapids. “We also made a few defensive adjustments to slow down their right side. Anna Stephenson had a great offensive and defensive night tonight. Setter Sarah Thompson did a great job of getting Stephenson the ball in set 2 and Anna executed very well. Defensive specialist Kaylie Isaman and Grace Peterson did a great job switching base positions to make the defensive adjustments we were looking for. Adriana Torres had a strong 6 point serving run to get the momentum to turn our way and the Viking won set 2, 25-19.”

In set 3 Pelican Rapids was still concerned about improving their serve receive and getting their middle hitters in the offense more. Both Kaylie Isaman and Grace Peterson made some great improvement on serve receive and setter Sarah Thompson did a good job of continuing to feed Stephenson while also getting middle hitter Greta Tollefson and Adriana Torres into the offense. Both middles hit the ball well and Anna Stephenson had a few big blocks. The Vikings won set 3, 25-18.

Set 4 started as a tight battle again but the Vikings had a few communication errors to create some critical dropped balls. Breckenridge used this momentum change to their advantage and went on a run. Greta Tollefson had a great kill out of the middle and middle hitter Riley Berg picked up her offense and defense to give Thompson another setting choice. Torres and Stephenson continued to hit the ball very well and outside hitter Riley Berg ended the game on a big kill. The Viking won set 4, 25-21.

Staistical leaders for Pelican Rapids included Ryley Paulson (4 aces, 5 kills), Torres (8 digs, 8 kills), Isaman (26 digs), Thompson (13 digs, 26 set assists, 4 kills), Peterson (7 digs), Stephenson (3.5 block kills, 8 kills) and Tollefson (4 kills).

The Vikings finished 3-3 in the conference. They will travel to Fergus Falls on Thursday for their Blocktoberfest tourney.

Abby Johnson (9 kills, 23 digs), Kaitlin Arnhalt (18 assists, 14 digs, 3 acs), Chase Yaggie (9 kills), Camryn Kaehler (10 kills, 13 digs, 2 aces), Carly Vizenor (22 digs) and Kayley Ceroll (14 assists, 16 digs) led the Cowgirls.  Riley Lorenz and Anya Maack each had 6 kills and 3 blocks.

Breckenridge will participate in the Fergus Falls Tournament on Thursday.
