The Hawley Nuggets knocked off the third ranked Barnesville Trojans 19-18 Friday night in a game that featured less than ideal field conditions in Hawley. The loss was the first of the season for Barnesville.

“The muddy field did not help our speed and running game at all and it didn't affect their passing game much,” commented Barnesville Head Coach Bryan Strand.  “It was a good contest between two fairly equal teams, the difference on the night was the made extra point by them and our inability to convert on any of our three 2 point conversions.  I was very proud how we battled the entire night, it was a great football game.”

The Trojans started the night on defense, and held the Nuggets on their first drive, and forced a punt. On the return the Trojans fumbled the punt giving Hawley the ball on the 30 yard line.  They were able to capitalize on the mistake and scored the first points of the game, taking a 7-0 lead. On the ensuing kickoff Preston Snoblfielded the ball at the 20 yard line and went virtually untouched the other direction. Barnesville missed the conversion run, and trailed 7-6.  In the second quarter Chase Brenner capped a twelve play, 68 yard scoring drive by taking the ball in from 23 yards out. The 2 point conversion pass failed, but Barnesville led 12-7. The Trojans recovered a muffed kickoff at the 15 yard line, however, a great run by Kellen Hinsz was called back due to an illegal block.  The Trojans were unable to capitalize on the turnover.  The Trojans held defensively and had the ball again in good field position, taking it down to the 8 after 9 plays and missing a field goal attempt. Hawley was able to put together a nice drive right before the half and Jacob Vetter hit Hunter Magnusson with a 21 yard TD pass, giving Hawley a 13-12 halftime lead.

Barnesville got the ball to start the 2nd half and drove in and scored when Adam Tonsfeldt found the seam and took it in from 35 yards out, again the conversion failed and the Trojans were up 18-13. Hawley would answer with a nice 12 play drive which was capped off when Sr. QB Jacob Vetter took it in from 1 yard out, putting the score at 19-18 at the end of 3.  Both teams moved the ball in the 4th but were unable to score leaving the final score at 19-18, Hawley.

“It was a good game, kids played hard, we were slowed down considerably by the field conditions but in the end they beat us, hope we get another shot at them in section finals as I think we can do better,” said Coach Strand.  “Hats off to Coach Peder Naatz and the players from Hawley, they played a great game.  It was a fun game to be a part of.”

Nick Detloff (13 carries, 69 yards), Adam Tonsfeldt (10 carries, 63 yards) and Brenner (10 carries, 55 yards) to lead a rushing attack that gained 227 yards on the night. Defensive leaders were Brooks Martinson with 11 tackles and one sack, Hunter Anderson with 8 tackles and a sack, and Hunter Zenzen was in on five tackles and recorded a pair of quarterback sacks.

Barnesville will close out their regular season schedule with a home game against Breckenridge.
