The Hillcrest Comet Boys soccer team defeated the East Grand Forks Green Wave by the score of 2-1, in overtime, in a Section 8A quarter final matchup on Saturday afternoon at Danielsen Field on the campus of Hillcrest Academy in Fergus Falls.

EGF, with the wind at their backs, took the lead, 22 minutes into the first half on a corner kick goal.  Five minutes into the second half, Iver Honningdal scored with a header, to tie the game, off a Markus Fluge corner kick.  Both teams had chances during the remainder of the half, but, the score was tied after the end of regulation.  With a minute left in the second overtime, Markus Fluge threaded a perfect pass behind the Green Wave defense to Eirik Primavera.  Primavera advanced the ball into the box and was taken down by an East Grand Forks D Back.  Markus Fluge converted the PK opportunity into the “golden goal” and the win for the Comets.

“It was a great game for spectators,” commented HLA Head Coach Rod Jensen. “EGF came to play, and had the Comets on their heels in the first half with their speed.  We had excellent defensive efforts from Senior Tri-Captain Nick Foss, breaking up the Green Wave offensive attacks at the midfield.  Senior Tri-Captain HeeTae Nam, also provided good midfield defensive efforts, along with Senior Sweeper, Trevor Antuna.  Outside mids, Joel Ystebo and Alex Knutson had good games on both sides of the ball as well.  Comet Keeper, Mervin Makundi, made six saves to protect the Comet win.

The Comets now 12-5, will host Sartell-St. Stephen, the number four seed in the south in the Section 8A semifinals on Tuesday at 3:30pm at Danielsen Field at Hillcrest Lutheran Academy. The Sabres beat top-seeded St. Cloud Apollo 1-0 in a shootout on Saturday in St. Cloud.
